It was the Filmfare Awards last night, the biggest event in the Bollywood calendar. But sadly, the sponsors didn’t let photographers inside the venue, so we have to make do with the grainy photos that have popped up on Twitter for our fashion appraisal. And, here are our picks of the best dressed men from the event.

Desi menswear always gets our vote, but Gaurav Arora’s spot on our list was a surety the moment he decided to throw that eye-catching brooch into the monochrome mix. He looked so princely, no?

Harshvardhan Kapoor

Harshvardhan Kapoor wangled his way into our list by virtue of that burgundy velvet jacket from Ermenegildo Zegna’s Autumn/Winter’16 collection; otherwise, this look was nowhere near as snappy as we have come to expect of him. Since it was a big night, we wished he opted for a bow-tie instead of that mature-looking tie and slipped in a Presidential fold white pocket square.

FINALYYYY a look that is equal parts polished and modern from Tiger Shroff. So simple but pretty much perfect. More of this, going forward, Tiger.

…the novelty factor in Jim Sarbh’s get-up. (I know, it’s virtually identical to Jared Leto’s iconic Oscar 2016 look, but we ain’t complaining.) He actually managed to create a performance with his outfit! The black dinner suit with red piping was quirky enough but it was the whimsical addition of the neck corsage that took the look to a whole another level.

And last but not the least, the flaneur’s panache with which he is wearing the look… oh là là! Bravo, Jim, bravo.

With his last release Varun Dhawan announced himself as a bona fide movie star — and he is sure dressing like one these days. Take, for instance, the Hello! Hall of Fame Awards 2017 last night, where he brought proper pomp and circumstance with his outfit.

He decided to go the black-tie route, opting for a shawl-collar velvet dinner jacket in the most sinful shade of green. With something as striking as the Brooks Brothers dinner jacket, a single element out of place is enough to drag the look to the try-hard territory. And this is exactly what Varun — or his stylist, Vainglorious! — was mindful of, choosing to set off the number with classic accessories like a crisp white dress shirt, a nicely-proportioned bow-tie, Presidential-fold white pocket square and patent double monks.

What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion is a reflection of what you are thinking and feeling at different points and intervals, and it can also be a projection of what you are trying to put out there.

How would you define your sense of style?

I am often very under-dressed and extremely comfortable in my everyday life, so you would find me mostly in sweatpants, rag & bone T-shirts and sneakers.

Did any film’s costumes appeal to you?

All Sofia Coppola and Terrence Malick films!

In Bollywood, is there anyone (save for your dad) whose style appeals to you?

I like Imran Khan‘s formal wear.

Which is your favourite designer/brand?

Paul Smith and  Marc Jacobs

Where do you shop from?

Most recently I shopped from a boutique in East London, but I buy stuff online and from a host of places.

What is the favourite item in your wardrobe?

A Marc Jacobs winter jacket that I bought from the store in East Village when I was 17 — and it still fits me perfectly. It is the softest jacket ever and was quite expensive. And my collection of sweatpants!

Ranbir Kapoor is a bona fide sneaker-head and has amassed a mind-boggling collection of sneakers; Fawad Khan has a large collection of pocket squares and Gucci Horesebit loafers. Do you have any such sartorial obsession?

Yes, sweatpants!

After all, being stylish is like being funny: it doesn’t work if you force it. And his outfit to the GQ Best Dressed party was straight out of that school of thought. The purple Paul Smith suit paired with a grey, patterned Scotch & Soda pullover had that enviable air of effortlessness, but we wished he went with a pair of luxe sneakers instead of those white performance shoes from Adidas. This look would have gotten a perfect 10 from us!

Rij Eappen aka The King of Clubs (MissMalini’s Nightlife Influencer) has the appearance of having being born to wear a tailored suit! This is not a quality that is easy to achieve. It requires a certain attention to detail and yet in the hands of the truly stylish, the result is always one of natural insouciance — like Rij’s at the GQ Best Dressed party. His trick was to choose a strong central garment, which was the navy jacquard blazer from Troy Costa, and add just a light smattering of accessories. That being said, this look would have fallen flat on its face were it not for the impeccable fit — did I mention attention to detail? This was ace, Rij!

This man! Does he ever stop showing off his sartorial finesse? This outfit had multiple elements going on — rust-coloured checked blazer (by Canali), powder blue shirt (by Ermenegildo Zegna), navy tie (by Brioni), white pocket square, grey trousers (by Sanchit Baweja), brown Oxfords — but they somehow all worked together in harmony. The reason being, he’s wearing this ensemble with the nonchalance that is essential for carrying off this kind of thing. Watch and learn, guys, watch and learn.

It takes a style legend in the making like Tiger Shroff (with assured guidance from the fashionable twosome of Vainglorious) to show you how to nail all-black. It’s all about the fit, really. And oh, special mention for the Chelsea boots (from Tod’s), which made this outfit polished yet somewhat edgy.

You gotta save the best for the last! Sushant Singh Rajput owned the room last night with his stunningly utilitarian look. That velvet smoking jacket from Turnbull & Asser was the height of nocturnal elegance. But if there’s one thing we’d like you to take away from this look, it’d be the fit: note the ideal length of the sleeve to expose half an inch of shirt cuff, how the jacket nips in at the waist, and how the trouser hems finish on the shoe. This gets a perfect 10 from us!

The purple suit was a showstopper and he let it be the main focus by avoiding accessories altogether and picking a printed shirt that caught the central colour of the outfit. This is louche done right.

We loved that Saif Ali Khan brought a little pomp and circumstance to his hosting duties by going full-throttle in some Tom Ford formalwear. But we do wish the trousers were a little tapered to make the look snappier and pop more.

That Gucci S/S’17 suit is a thing of implausible artistry: the print looks like traditional paisley… but upon closer inspection you’ll see that it’s actually mini sea-horses and shooting stars! We loved this suit to pieces, but, we are kind of feeling woozy looking at that roll-neck jumper in this NYC heat. Sorry, Jim! If he wore just a crisp white shirt or a black T-shirt, this look would have been our favourite from the night.

It has been, what, three years, but Alessandro Michele’s Gucci juggernaut is showing no signs of slowing down. Which is why it’s such a bummer that we don’t get to see his creations on any of our Bollywood men other than Jim Sarbh. So imagine our surprise when we caught Rahul Khanna, the consummate austere dresser, don one of Alessandro’s whimsical numbers a few days ago at the GQ Bar Nights.

Navy pinstripe suit, solid baby pink shirt, black leather lace-ups. It sounds like a typical Rahul Khanna-look, doesn’t it? But, if you look closer, you’ll see that:

a) Those are not pinstripes but a multicoloured pin dot pattern.

Charming, all of it, no? There’s no denying that Alessandro’s stuff is for the sartorially adventurous souls, but if you’re not one then Rahul just now gave you hope. Yep, all you conservative dressers no longer have to admire Alessandro’s Gucci from afar — you too can rock it!
