Anil Kapoor in SS HOMME and Lanvin

Ah, this Anil Kapoor, he never misses a beat to flaunt his style credentials. Take, for instance, his obligation to frolic with a bunch of underprivileged school kids for P&G’s Shiksha initiative. Us plebs would think a basic tee and a pair of jeans would be good enough for the occasion, but Messr Kapoor, THE God of Style… ? Oh, don’t be silly! He turned up in an effortlessly smart outfit, and in so doing, gave us the template to smash it (sartorially speaking!) at the next brunch do.

Anil Kapoor

Clad in an azure blue SS HOMME blazer with tab detailing, indigo denims, Shiksha tee and burgundy Lanvin sneakers, he looked oh-so-chic — but distinctly relaxed that the event in question called for.

But what took the look to lofty heights was the paisley-printed blob of fabric resting on the breast pocket of the blazer. It nicely punctuated all the azure and together with the tab detailing of the blazer, brought just the right amount of visual interest to the look.

So guys, here’s a spot of suggestion for you: copy this look for your next brunch/lunch do and then sit back and watch as the plaudits roll in (and later thank Abhilasha Devnani, his stylist, for it!).

Ranbir Kapoor in Dries Van Noten

Who would have thought that Ranbir Kapoor has a cheeky side to him, seeing how decorous he is at all times? He turned up at Arjun Kapoor’s birthday bash on Saturday night in a shirt with print of… a naked man! Yep, you read that right.

Dries Van Noten Naked Dancer shirt from S/S’15

Dries Van Noten  S/S’15

The shirt is from the ace Belgian designer Dries Van Noten’s Spring/Summer’15 collection, the one which was inspired by the seminal ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, a figure of sensual, almost animalistic eroticism. A line drawing of a nude male dancer cropped up in several pieces, with one of them being the silk shirt worn by Ranbir.

One of the “Antwerp Six”, a revolutionary Belgian design collective of the 1980s, Dries continues to be a highly regarded fashion designer, celebrated for his intelligent designs and unique fashion sensibility. But, it is still a brand for those in-the-know, and definitely not a household name like Gucci, Dior, Armani, Prada and so on — yet. I don’t remember a Dries sighting in Bollywood before this. Just. So. Impressed.

Fawad Khan in Dior Homme at the Vogue Beauty Awards 2015

Fawad Khan

When it’s the Vogue Beauty Awards, you’d think that the menfolk would simply fly under the radar. But nope, not these hombres, who put their best (sartorial) foot forward on Tuesday night and went head to head with the ladies. Read on for proof…

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma at the Vogue Beauty Awards 2015

Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma

It’s always tricky to dress for an event where your missus is getting the big award for the night. Go big and people would think you were trying to outshine her. Keep it simple and people would think you couldn’t be arsed for it. You really can’t win. Except Virat Kohli just did, with that rakish windowpane number. The exaggerated peak lapel suit of yore was given a contemporary touch here by way of the windowpane fabric, slim cut and cropped trousers. It was smart, age-appropriate, interesting but not attention-hijacking.

Virat Kohli

You’ve done well there, Mr Kohli. But next time, try not to put your phone(s) in your dress trouser pockets — they ruin the line of your trousers!

Fawad Khan

Fawad Khan in Dior Homme at the Vogue Beauty Awards 2015

Fawad Khan in Dior Homme

Not to his usual lofty standards (maybe, because Abhilasha Devnani didn’t style him), but this look of Fawad Khan was still neat. Wish the jacket was better fitted and that he didn’t leave it hanging like that, but more than that, I wish he ditched the useless tie altogether and went the air tie route like…

Jackky Bhagnani

Jackky Bhagnani in Zegna at the Vogue Beauty Awards 2015

Jackky Bhagnani in Zegna

Who, with that suede navy blazer, dress scarf and air tie, and those cropped trousers and ostrich leather loafers, cut quite the raffish figure. While I was overjoyed to spot a dress scarf, a criminally underused weapon from the men’s sartorial arsenal, on the red carpet (nice move, Vainglorious!), I was left disappointed by the way it was sitting on Jackky Bhagnani. It deserved to be at the front and centre of proceedings but here, it was barely peeking out from underneath the blazer.

Jackky Bhagnani at the Vogue Beauty Awards 2015

And another quibble I have is that fat watch — it had no business being here!

Parikshat Wadhwani

This look had too much swag! Totally tripping on that checked suit from Zara, but, erm, wished the shirt collar was safely tucked under the jacket. And the pop of colour from the shoelaces was such a pleasant surprise.

Imran Khan (Photo courtesy | Vainglorious)

Some of the life’s great certainties… Anna Wintour and her Manolo Blahnik slingbacks… Simon Cowell and his stratospherically high-waisted, boot cut jeans… Kim Kardashian’s zest to take her kit off anytime and anywhere… a girl whining of having nothing to wear despite owning 17 times the number of clothes + shoes a person can need in a lifetime… and Imran Khan’s clean sweep in the style stakes of every event he turns up at. Even that didn’t prepare me for the sartorial tour de force he unleashed upon us during his trip to Australia a couple of weeks ago. Friends, hop on — this one’s not to be missed.

Imran Khan in Belstaff ‘Brentwood’ peacoat and Maison Margiela leather and felt/wool combat boots (Photo courtesy | Viral Bhayani/Maison Margiela)

Heading to a nippy destination? Want to arrive there looking effortlessly stylish? Then you could do half-badly by following Imran’s lead and grabbing a peacoat. This particular style of coat, double-breasted, cut short in the body and with broad collars, falls somewhere between smart and casual, so you could say it’s the perfect example of form and function. Throw on a straight-leg jeans and fling a printed scarf around your neck and you are guaranteed to get admiring glances all throughout the journey.

And another thing: Imran’s choice of brand for the peacoat impressed me too. He’s wearing the navy ‘Brentwood’ one of Belstaff, an ultraluxe brand that is yet to take off amongst the Bollywood crowd. Before this, I only saw Ranbir sport Belstaff wares.

His first event in Australia was a talk show, ‘Talk About It’, on ABC News and for that he wore a khaki windowpane blazer by Corneliani, navy Tom Ford knitted tie, grey dress trousers by Ermenegildo Zegna and Herring ‘Rushden II’ mahogany brogues. This look, my friends, was a masterclass on how you can mix and match items from your wardrobe to put together a winning look.

Imran Khan in Hermès, Zegna and Herring (Photo courtesy | Vainglorious/Herring)

For the next round of promotions, he was seen in a navy cable knit roll neck jumper by Hermès, cobalt Zegna trousers and the ‘Exmoor’ brogues by Herring. I really liked how all that blue was offset by the tweed and chestnut of the footwear.

You can’t have an Imran Khan lookbook without a Tom Ford suit in there, so it’s no wonder then that he turned to the label for the opening night of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. He opted for the charcoal ‘Micro Houndstooth Flannel’ suit from the Autumn/Winter’15 collection, which he paired with a graph print tab collar shirt (also by TF), patterned red Drake’s tie and a swoonsome pair of Ferragamo double monks. Perfection from head-to-toe — and my favourite look of his from this Australia trip.

Imran Khan in Belstaff and O’Keeffe (Photo courtesy | IFFM/Farfetch/O’Keeffe)

It was another Belstaff number the following day for the ‘Telstra Bollywood Dance Competition’ — and a rather delectable one too, no? He teamed the red biker jacket with a denim shirt from Dior Homme, slim leg denims from Albam Clothing and moss-hued suede chukka boots by… O’Keeffe! While I’ve always put Imran down as someone well versed with all things sartorial, this is some next level stuff! I. Just. Can’t.

Imran Khan in Belstaff, Dior Homme, Albam Clothing and O’Keeffe (Photo courtesy | Vainglorious)

Imran Khan (Photo courtesy | Vainglorious)

So guys, let me now introduce you to O’Keeffe, a footwear brand for those very much in the know. In its own words, O’Keeffe fuses luxury Italian craftsmanship with Irish heritage, creating handsome shoes that are handcrafted in small batches with a “ready worn-in and hand-me-down feel”. Their inspiration harks back to the 1920s and 1950s footwear — from the workingman to the landed gentry.

Should someone look underneath the tongues of his O’Keeffe shoes, he will spot a curious crest in Latin, with the left one reading “To the brave and faithful” and the right “Nothing is Difficult”. Now who would not face the world with a spring in their step with such poetry quite literally at their feet, aye?

On a serious note, if you’re in the market for some investment footwear, I can’t recommend O’Keeffe enough — their shoes are soaked in quality and style. And Imran can’t seem to get enough of his O’Keeffe number ‘cos he repeated it for another appearance and wore on his flight back to Bombay.

SO, which one was your favourite look from his trip Down Under?

PS. He was styled by Vainglorious all throughout this trip.

Ah, you precious Time, you have got to, got to slow down… a little, at least. I’m yet to recover from Imran Khan’s dashing black-tie look that another GQ Men Of The Year Awards has gone past us. Without further ado, I’ll get you to the men who made our style cut. Mind you, none could reach the levels of sartorial dexterity that Imran showed that night.

Rahul Bose

Rahul Bose

Guys, take it from Rahul Bose, who knows a thing or two about style: #itscooltorepeat. (He also wore this suit to another Condé Nast shindig — obsessed much?) But wish he stuck to his previous template and didn’t go all matchy-matchy with the footwear and left out the tie clip.

Rahul Bose at the 2015 GQ Men Of The Year Awards (Photo courtesy | Viral Bhayani)

Rahul Bose

Why not the tie clip? Well, here’s the thing: if you’re going to opt for one, make sure that it’s not wider than your tie. If it is, its addition would seem like an afterthought and an effortlessly stylish man never leaves his house with one-too-many accessory.

But, I can’t recommend the tie clip enough to elevate your suited up look. A tie clip in the 21st century suggests that you’re a man of particular fastidiousness, the kind who exercises taste, restraint and flair in everything he does. And yes, maybe also the kind who is grieving about Mad Men going off the air.

Imran Khan

Katti Batti’s run at the box office might be nothing to write home about, but Imran Khan’s outfits during its promotion trail? Friends, let’s make us a nice pot of tea first, ‘cos… I have plenty to talk about!

When it comes to formal wear, Imran was always bang on, but it’s his casual wear game that I found wanting: I thought it was far too mature for his age and looks,  severe and heavy. But I suppose he saw the error in his ways, ‘cos for the Katti Batti promotion trail he enlisted the help of a stylist(s) [it’s the terribly fashionable duo who go by the name of Vainglorious], who made him dress younger than ever before. Hallelujah! It wasn’t a complete 360 — there were still elements of his previous style — but it was a step in the right direction. Now, don’t you want to see the result? I don’t want to bore you with my commentary on each and every one of the looks, so here are some talking points…

Yet-to-be-released Belstaff Numbers

Imran Khan in Belstaff pre-spring 2016 collection

Imran Khan in Belstaff pre-spring 2016 collection

Ever since David Beckham tied up with Belstaff, my fascination for this heritage British brand shot through the roof (#IAmAnUnabashedBecksmaniac). So imagine how impressed I was when I saw Imran rocking stuff from Belstaff’s pre-spring 2016 and spring/summer 2016 collections during the promotion trail, both of which are yet to hit the stores! That’s some serious pulling power there, which becomes all the more impressive when you realise that Belstaff has no physical presence in India yet.

A+ Sneaker Game

One of my major gripes with Imran’s erstwhile casual game was that he seldom wore sneakers and was almost always seen in chunky boots or heavy loafers. So I was pleasantly surprised to see him sport sneakers a lot — and that too ones that “high fashion sneakerheads” would be well proud of.

Imran Khan in Saint Laurent, Armani Jeans and Common Projects to promote ‘Katti Batti’ at NM College’s Umang Festival (Photo courtesy | Viral Bhayani)

Imran Khan in Common Projects BBall sneakers

Guys, if you’re looking for a pair of smart sneakers, I can’t recommend the Common Projects BBall low-top sneakers — as seen on Imran — enough. Precisely pared-back and beautifully crafted, the result is an impossibly slick pair of sneakers that would inject a spot of upscale cool to any outfit of yours. They are a bit of an investment too: if you’re bored with them after a year or two, you can always re-sell them at half the price at the very least on eBay. Yep, there is a fertile resale market for second-hand Common Projects sneakers — and that speaks of the brand’s cachet.

Imran Khan in sky blue and grey Margiela ‘Replica’ sneakers

The other pair he sported a fair bit was the Maison Margiela ‘Replica’ low-tops, which were inspired by the army trainers designed in Austria in the 1970s. And bless, he seems to be quite fond of the panelled design, as he has them in two colours! Between these and the BBalls, I like the latter better, as they speak to my minimalist sensibilities. Having said that, the Replicas can look cool too if you wear them without laces, as Orlando Bloom tends to.

A Child Of The Jago + Brooks Brothers + Comme des Garçons x Bata

But my fave from the promotion trail was the Comme des Garçons x Bata tennis shoes. I simply loved how Rei Kawakubo breathed new life to those unexciting canvas shoes by slapping on CdG’s signature polka dot print. They are fun, easy and high on youthful attitude — and to be honest, rather unexpected from Imran.

Doing Print-on-Print Like A Boss

Imran Khan in Tom Ford at 'Katti Batti’ charity screening (Photo courtesy | Viral Bhayani)

Imran Khan in Tom Ford

The final flourish to his virtuoso sartorial display during the promotional trail was a suited-up look for the charity screening of Katti Batti. On first glance, it seems like just another well-tailored business formal look that he has done before and done them well. BUT, if you look closely, there’s some steady print-on-print action going on: windowpane checks, micro gingham and angular stripes. It takes a certain kind of skill for the visuals to pull off print-on-print without looking like you’ve been let out from the circus — and Imran (and his stylists) passed the test with flying colours.

SO, what did you think of Imran’s looks? Which one was your fave? Mine was the Comme des Garçons x Bata one due to its levity, with the Saint Laurent teddy jacket look coming a close second.

PS. Have you seen his looks for the Katti Batti promotions in Australia?

Sooraj Pancholi

From my raving of Imran Khan’s looks during the Katti Batti promotion trail, you’d think that he was the only well-dressed man in B-Town the past couple of months. But, that wasn’t the case: he was given some competition in the style stakes by another cutie, who was also shilling his film the same time. Yep, I’m talking about Sooraj Pancholi, who caught my eye with his boy-next-door get-ups. While Imran gave us one epic Belstaff luxe parade, Sooraj (er, his stylist, Abhilasha Devnani) showed us how you can still look a million bucks by sporting just high-street labels. Don’t believe me? Sharply Dressed Men

Being perfectly well-dressed gives one a tranquillity that no religion can bestow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, great American philosopher (among other things!), once said. Had he been around still, he’d remark that these messrs hit that level with these formal outfits. I’d like to think. In other words, here’s our edit of the Bollywood menfolk who got it bang on when it came to suiting up/formal dressing in 2015 — hop on!

Shahid Kapoor was cleaning up the awards for his sublime take as Haider last year, so when it came to Filmfare Awards he arrived kitted out like he knew he was going to win. Everything about this Kunal Rawal outfit was on point — the epitome of sophistication and yet fresh and modern.

Ranveer Singh at Forbes’ 30 Under 30 event

Ranveer Singh in Brooks Brothers

One to always go for the attention-seeking, it’s nice, when, on the odd occasion, Ranveer Singh decides to rein it in. For the Forbes India 30 under 30 event, he wore an impeccable grey windowpane suit by Brooks Brothers that was accented with all sorts of purple. It’s an outfit that works fantastically — thanks to its fit and the harmonious colour combo.

Anil Kapoor at Sanjay Hinduja and Anu Mahtani pre-wedding bash

Is there a more dashing sight than a man in a well-cut sherwani? There is… ? You think so? In that case, I present to you… Anil Kapoor at Sanjay Hinduja and Anu Mahtani’s pre-wedding bash. Clad in a midnight blue sherwani by Rajesh Pratap Singh with white churidaars, he looked preposterously elegant that night.

Anil Kapoor in Rajesh Pratap Singh and Dolce & Gabbana

As impressive as his decision was to go down the sherwani route — and not the suit way — and that too in such a lush hue, it was his judgment to punctuate the sea of blue with a contrasting pocket square that elevated the look to otherworldly level. Mr Kapoor, my hat is well and truly off. Soz, Sonam, Rhea and Sunita, try as you may but it’s your old man/better half who takes the mantle of the most stylish Kapoor :-)

Farhan Akhtar at the Dil Dhadakne Do screening during IIFA

Farhan Akhtar’s get-up at the Dil Dhadakne Do screening during the IIFA weekend in Kuala Lumpur was an exhibition of taste, restraint and flair.

Farhan Akhtar

He had polka dots, micro checks and stripes on at once and none of it looked out of place. This was a coaching on how to do print-on-print without looking like a clown. Simply outstanding, this Govinda Mehta outfit was!

Imran Khan at the HT Mumbai’s Most Stylish Awards

When it comes to black-tie dressing/formalwear, Imran Khan is on a whole other level altogether. He knows how a suit should fit, how to accessorise it and the etiquettes for wearing it.

Imran Khan in Zegna, Tom Ford and Herring at the 2015 HT Mumbai’s Most Stylish Awards (Photo courtesy | Viral Bhayani)

Imran Khan in Zegna, Tom Ford and Herring

So no wonder then, that he was THE best dressed person at the HT’s Mumbai’s Most Stylish Awards — by a country mile. When there’s a made-to-measure Zegna dinner suit in a lush midnight blue hue, crisp white shirt, self-fastened bow-tie (both by Tom Ford), impossibly shiny black patent cap-toe balmorals (by Herring), you just can’t nitpick. Also, special mention to the Presidential style white pocket square, which added the final flourish to this incredible look. If the James Bond series was ever made in India, if…

Imran Khan at the Filmfare Glamour & Style Awards

Having said that, he can rebel with the dress code to a formal event if he fancies and still come up trumps. Take, for instance, his subversive take to black-tie dressing at the Absolut Elyx Filmfare Glamour & Style Awards.

Imran Khan in Tom Ford and Saint Laurent

He ditched the bow-tie altogether and teamed his slim-fitting dinner suit with a roll-neck (both by Tom Ford), and before walking through the front door, got on a pair of uber-cool Saint Laurent jodhpur boots. This look was steeped in vintage rock ’n’ roll swagger.

Imran Khan in Corneliani, Tom Ford, Zegna and Herring

Yeah, another Imran Khan entry! But what can I do when he turns up on the sets of an Australian talk show giving us a masterclass on how to mix and match items from your wardrobe to put together a winning look? He wore a khaki windowpane blazer by Corneliani, navy Tom Ford knitted tie, grey dress trousers by Ermenegildo Zegna and Herring ‘Rushden II’ mahogany brogues. All very disparate items but they looked so in sync.

Fawad Khan at the Filmfare Awards

It was established last year during the Khoobsurat promotion trail that Fawad Khan does not put a foot wrong when it comes to sartorial matters. And it was no different at the Filmfare Awards, which wrapped up the introductory chapter of his dream-like Bollywood travelogue.

Fawad Khan in Dior Homme at the 2015 Filmfare Awards (Photo courtesy | Filmfare)

Fawad Khan in Dior Homme

Clad in a Dior Homme suit with pinstriped waistcoat, Giorgio Armani shirt, Louis Philippe tie, Akshata Bhojania pocket square, Dolce & Gabbana patent lace-ups and Tag Heuer gold and steel watch, he was dapper extraordinaire as he strutted up on stage to collect the best debut award. With everything slim and tailored to perfection, this is exactly how you do monochrome.

Aditya Roy Kapur at the Filmfare Glamour & Style Awards

One to always turn up in events not sharply-dressed, this dashing black-tie look of Aditya Roy Kapur at the Absolut Elyx Filmfare Glamour & Style Awards knocked us off our bean bags.

Aditya Roy Kapur in Zegna, Corneliani, Canali and Tod’s at the 2015 Filmfare Glamour and Style Awards (Photo courtesy | Filmfare)

From the perfect fit of the dinner suit (by Zegna) through to the patent monk straps (by Tod’s) and the cummerbund (by Canali) in between, this was one virtuoso sartorial outing. And special mention for the monk-straps, an anti-establishment alternative to the classic Oxfords. Ah, there’s a still a hint of the old Aditya!

Mohit Marwah at the Filmfare Awards

Yeah, I’m one of the few hundred Boardwalk Empire fans around, so I totally looooved the 1920s throwback in Mohit Marwah’s ensemble for the Filmfare Awards by way of the club collar shirt (by Armani, FYI) and the lapel chain, which, by the way, got a decidedly novel spin here. It was pinned to the tie! The immaculate fit of the suit and the Ferragamo double-monks helped the case here too.

Rahul Bose at the IIFA Awards

What good is a round-up of the best-dressed men without a mention of Mr Bose, aye?

Rahul Bose

We expect nothing but perfection from him every time he suits up and this look of his at the IIFA Awards was no different. This is simplicity at its best!

Virat Kohli at the Vogue Beauty Awards

Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma at the Vogue Beauty Awards 2015

Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma

It’s always tricky to dress for an event where your missus is getting the big award for the night. Go big and people would think you were trying to outshine her. Keep it simple and people would think you couldn’t be arsed for it. You really can’t win. Except Virat Kohli just did, with that rakish windowpane number by Anuj Madaan. The exaggerated peak lapel suit of yore was given a contemporary touch here by way of the windowpane fabric, slim cut and cropped trousers. It was smart, age-appropriate, interesting but not attention-hijacking.

A nicely tailored quirky suit, topped off with a gorgeous pocket square by Troy Costa on Troy Costa — what’s not to like, aye?

Akshay Kumar at the GQ Men Of The Year Awards

Akshay Kumar at the 2015 GQ Men Of The Year Awards

That textured dinner jacket was reason enough to get Akshay Kumar on this list, but those patent opera slippers simply made the case unassailable. I don’t remember any of the Bollywood menfolk sporting them before or after this. Muy jefe!

Rahul Khanna at the ANOKHI 12TH Anniversary Gala and Media Awards

Rahul Khanna at the ANOKHI 12th Anniversary Gala and Media Awards

Rahul Khanna

Yes, friends, like always, he smashed it out of the park at the ANOKHI 12th Anniversary Gala and Media Awards, where he was conferred the ‘International Actor of the Year’ award. From that immaculately tailored bandhgala through to those beauteous double-monks, everything about this look screamed perfection.

And the pocket square, it brought just the right dose of cheeriness to the authoritative proceedings. Guys, watch and learn — this is how it’s done.

SO, which one was your fave?

The best-dressed men at the 2016 Filmfare Awards

MY! How fast the time flies. It seems like just the other day I jotted down the style lessons that menfolk could take home from the 2015 Filmfare Awards that another one is upon us. While not as swashbuckling as the previous edition, this year’s event threw us some noteworthy menswear moves. So, without further ado, let me present to you the men who got it right on the biggest night in Bollywood…

Ronit Roy

Ronit and Neelam Roy

It could be the gorgeous dinner suit that Daniel Craig sported in Spectre, which is still fresh in my mind, but I’m digging ivory for dinner jackets nowadays. And this number on Ronit Roy left all the right impression on me (although I wish the jacket sleeves were half-a-inch shorter). It had just the right amount of black accents, and most importantly, he’s looking a like a bonafide movie star. What’s not to love, aye?

Gulshan Devaiah

Gulshan Devaiah in AT by Anash Thakkar and wife Kalli

This outfit of Gulshan Devaiah brought a smile to my face! It’s quirky done right and he looks quite at home in it. Bless.

Ayushmann Khurrana

Ayushmann Khurrana, in Troy Costa, and Tahira Kashyap

Ayushmann Khurrana’s outfit had me at the waistcoat. Guys, if you want to bring a nice point of difference to your suited up look in a formal do, I can’t extoll the virtues of a distinctive waistcoat enough. And if it’s in the shape of a horseshoe, all the more better.

Sooraj Pancholi

Sooraj Pancholi in Ermenegildo Zegna and Grenson

The new kid on the block erred on the side of timeless and in so doing, quietly stood out amongst many old-timers. I love that his stylists, Vainglorious, kept his proportions in mind and went for slim lapels and small bowtie. He looks confident and comfortable — the definition of effortlessness.

Manish Malhotra

Manish Malhotra

Long-time readers know by now that I’m a sucker for desi menswear. So, there’s no way in hell that I’d have left out Manish Malhotra from this edit. Like last year, he showed up in a kurt suit, and like last year, looked impossibly elegant.

Anil Kapoor

Anil Kapoor in Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford and Brioni

Never far from our minds when compiling any best-dressed list, Anil Kapoor made us sit up and take notice by stepping out in one of our favourite colours — burgundy. It’s an outfit that works, thanks to its boldness and simplicity — both things that are important when pulling a fancy sartorial move like this. Needless to mention, the fit of the Dolce & Gabbana DB suit was spot on — may such felicitous combinations of person and tailoring continue forevermore!

Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh in Tom Ford

I’ve been drooling over this psychedelic dinner jacket the moment I clocked my eyes on it a year ago on TF’s A/W’15 look book (actually, all the dinner jackets from that collection!), so its sighting on a Bollywood red carpet got me all excited. And the fact that Ranveer Singh reined in his maximalist styling tendencies for this gorgeous number gladdened me. Now were the fit of the jacket more trimmer and the pocket square done up in a Presidential style, this look would have been my favourite of the night.

Fawad Khan

Sadaf and Fawad Khan, in Brooks Brothers, Paul Smith, Camessi, Vanity Homme and Christian Louboutin

That distinction goes to Fawad Khan. Yep, for the second year in a row his was my fave look  from the Filmfare Awards. Ah, Messr Khan, we missed you! It’s been, what, weeks, since we last bowed down to his sartorial greatness, and now that we have the opportunity to do so again, there’s a warm and fuzzy feeling in our stomachs. That tartan dinner jacket (by Brooks Brothers), those ankle-flashing trousers (by Camessi), the patent slippers (by Christian Louboutin)… all next level menswear moves, which he pulled off with such nonchalance! Mr Khan, my hat is well and truly off. (And a shout-out to his stylist too — Abhilasha Devnani!)

SO, which was your fave from the night?

Tiger Shroff Knows Just How To Pull Off A Casual & Cool Look

Tiger Shroff

Tiger Shroff. What does the name remind you of? Acrobatic dance moves… kick-ass fight sequences… Michelangelo’s David-like form… and an aversion towards a shirt/tee/top! So when I chanced upon this set of pictures from Baaghi promotional rounds, I got quite the shock. Not only was he fully clothed, he was wearing stuff that were packed with unusual details. Wanna see?

Tiger Shroff in Lost & Found Rooms (Photo courtesy | Viral Bhayani/Farfetch)

Nope, he’s not doing a Karl Lagerfeld and wearing fingerless gloves just “cos-he-can”. The sleeves of his t-shirt are actually like that — with gloved cuffs. Impressed? Yep, I thought so too.

Tiger Shroff in Lost & Found Ria Dunn black and white lace-up sneakers during Baaghi promotions (Photo courtesy | Viral Bhayani/Farfetch)

And now I want you to direct your gaze towards his footwear — they are über-cool too, no? I, for one, loved them for their off-kilter feel by way off the rustic stitching and exaggerated rubber soles.

Both the pieces were by this highly conceptual label called Lost & Found Ria Dunn. Conceptual I say because the label’s founder, Canadian designer Ria Dunn, burns through an array of fabric experimentations and construction techniques to arrive at the pieces, which are compellingly perverse yet practical. The biggest compliment she can get, she says, is “garments worn down to bare threads because it has been worn to death”.

What Do Zayn Malik & Emraan Hashmi Have in Common?

Zayn Malik & Emraan Hashmi

Zayn Malik & Emraan Hashmi

Emraan Hashmi, who’s thick in Azhar promotions, checked in to the India’s Got Talent sets a few day ago wearing an on-trend tonal striped suit by Italian designer, Andrea Pompilio. This itself would’ve gotten Emraan a thousand cool points, and then it occurred to me that it was the same rakish suit that Zayn Malik, the king of cool, was wearing in his iT’s YoU video.

Zayn, who is the epitome of cool, wore the suit with a roll-neck jumper and Chelsea boots, while Emraan went the conservative way, teaming it with a crisp white Zegna shirt and a pair of exquisite cap-toe, patent brogues from Tod’s. SO, who’s take on the suit do you like better?

Tod’s cap-toe patent brogues

Tod’s cap-toe patent brogues

Speaking of stripes, they are a big menswear trend for spring/summer’16. While you’ll be able to jump on this trend easily by buying either a standout short-sleeved shirt or t-shirt, next level menswear aficionados should try out a striped suit, like Emraan and Zayn have here.

Abhay Deol and Imran Khan

It’s that time of the year again, when GQ India rolls out its red carpet to raise a toast to the stylish men in the country! And without further ado, I’m taking you through all the hits, super hits and blockbuster menswear looks from the 2016 #GQBestDressed event. So,  fasten your seat belts…

Hits

Karan Tacker in AT By Anasha Thakkar at the 2016 GQ Best Dressed party

Karan Tacker in AT By Anasha Thakkar

Shruken suits paired with tasselled slippers have become a Karan Tacker signature look by now. But for the GQ Best Dressed night he went one step ahead and threw in some dizzying print. There’s no denying Karan looks well fit in the outfit, but the print, patent leather tasselled slippers and the lapel pin all together made too much noise.

Ayushmann Khurrana in Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna at the 2016 GQ Best Dressed party

Ayushmann Khurrana in Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna

A teal suit paired with a slate graphic shirt… sounds like all kinds of chaotic, right? But trust Ayushmann Khurrana to find order in this madness. Now how did he do that? By keeping the fit of the suit (by Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna) very precise. And I love how the slate shirt anchors the sea of teal. Now I wish he skipped the lapel pin — this look would’ve been higher up in my ranks.

Shahid Kapoor in Z Zegna and Tod’s at the 2016 GQ Best Dressed party

Shahid Kapoor in Z Zegna and Tod’s

Where Ayushmann erred, Shahid Kapoor passed with flying colours: he too went with a jewel-toned suit and printed shirt but kept any frills off bay, and in so doing, achieved a controlled air of rakishness. Now you may ask why he is not amongst the super hits and blockbusters. Well, it’s because of the footwear. A look imbued with as much youthful attitude as this needed a pair of pristine luxe sneakers to finish it off.

Saqib Saleem in Anuj Madaan, Paul Smith and Clark’s at the 2016 GQ Best Dressed party

Saqib Saleem in Anuj Madaan, Paul Smith and Clark’s

Yet another potentially winning look that was let down by some superfluous accessorising. The paisley-printed Paul Smith shirt lent ample visual interest and depth to the look, so the lapel pin was not really needed here. And a pair of sneakers would have set off Saqib Saleem’s youthful looks nicely, just like they have…

Imaad Shah in Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo at the 2016 GQ Best Dressed party

Imaad Shah in Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo

…in case of Imaad Shah here. Effortless yet smart he looked in the Gucci threads and Ferragamo sneakers — what’s not to like, aye?

Abhay Deol at the 2016 GQ Best Dressed party

Abhay Deol

Such a clean, fuss-free look! Just wish Abhay Deal put in a little more thought in his footwear and injected a pop of colour by way of a pocket square OR a lapel pin (but not both!). Here is one instance where the functionality of the lapel pin wouldn’t have gone amiss.

Super Hits

Kunal Rawal at the 2016 GQ Best Dressed party

Kunal Rawal in Kunal Rawal, Balenciaga and Rick Owens

I’m a sucker for Kunal Rawal’s thoroughly idiosyncratic style. So, it’s a given that this look of his would get a massive thumbs-up from me.

Dino Morea in Sahil Aneja at the 2016 GQ Best Dressed party

Dino Morea in Sahil Aneja

Dina Morea simply wants to concentrate on looking good without ruffling any feathers — and that’s an attitude we wholeheartedly approve of here at MM HQs. Ridiculously dapper, this, Sig. Morea. And special mention for the immaculate tailoring.

Chetan Jaikishan in Gucci at the 2016 GQ Best Dressed party

Chetan Jaikishan in Gucci

Ever since Alessandro Michele took over the reins at Gucci, I wondered if his colourful, eccentric, vintage-inspired sensibility would float Indian men’s boats. I need not wonder anymore, because Chetan Jaikishan just gave me the answer. The striped trousers, the furry slippers and the boutonnière made such a wonderful spectacle — and Messrs Jaikishan looks right at home in it. Major love!

Imran Khan in Zegna, Tod’s and Tom Ford at the 2016 GQ Best Dressed party

Imran Khan in Ermenegildo Zegna, Tod’s and Tom Ford

Right, I really, really wanted to LOVE this look, but for some reason it just falls flat on me. Maybe because he employed one-too-many accessories from his sartorial lexicon, or maybe because of the cut of the DB jacket. Make no mistake, this is one impressive look but it didn’t knock me sideways, like Imran Khan’s formal looks tend to.

Blockbuster

Rahul Khanna in Dior Homme S/S’16 at the 2016 GQ Best Dressed party

Rahul Khanna in Dior Homme

Dior Homme in navy blue and orange double-sided two-button jacket

Dior Homme’s navy blue and orange double-sided wool jacket

Given the buffet of overcooked looks, this minimalist look of Rahul Khanna felt like a palate cleanser. The navy blue and orange double-sided two-button jacket from Dior Homme’s S/S’16 collection provided just the right amount of visual intrigue to this elegantly stark outfit. Hey, it was my favourite and I’m sticking to it — brickbats and all.

SO, which look was your favourite?

Shahid Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana in Z Zegna

Shahid Kapoor waltzed into the GQ Best Dressed party the other night wearing a burgundy Z Zegna suit from their S/S’16 collection, which, as it turns out, it was previously sported by Ayushmann Khurrana at the 2016 GiMA Awards.

While Shahid downplayed the silk blend number by going open-necked and pairing it with semi-formal monkstraps, Ayushmann went all the way and dressed it up with a bow-tie, pocket square and patent opera slippers.

SO, who’s take on the suit you liked better? If I must pick, I’d go with Ayushmann — he had me with those Christian Louboutin opera slippers.

PS: Shahid was styled by Vasundhara Sharma and Ayushmann by Isha Bhansali.

Fawad Khan in Republic by Omar Farooq

We have come to expect nothing but sartorial perfection from Fawad Khan. Every. Single. Time. And more often than not, he delivers and then some, like he has at Madrid on Friday night for the IIFA Rocks event.

Fawad Khan in Republic by Omar Farooq at the 2016 IIFA Rocks

Fawad Khan in Republic by Omar Farooq

He went for an eye-catching jacquard dinner jacket from Pakistani menswear label Republic by Omar Farooq, which he paired with slim black trousers, patent oxfords, a cummerbund, a crisp white pocket square and a bow-tie — and bugger me, what a rakishly debonair picture he made!

I love that he tempered the showiness of the checked fabric of the dinner jacket by keeping the rest of the outfit as simple as possible. So guys, here’s an important sartorial lesson for you: if your jacket is shouting, make sure the rest of your outfit is whispering.

Just wish he didn’t opt for that wing-collar shirt – or else, this look would have gotten a 10 out of 10 from me. I have it in good authority that Fawad’s styling himself in Madrid, so this outing becomes all the more impressive to me.

Anil Kapoor and Ranveer Singh

From the sound of things, IIFA 2016 seems like one hell of a ride, and I for one can’t wait for it air on Colors. But good for me, I have these ace menswear looks to gawk at until then. Don’t you want to see which ones I’m talking over? Hop on.

Ritiesh Deshmukh in Raghavendra Rathore

Very, very dapper from Riteish Deshmukh. And he always seems to bring his A-game to the IIFA green carpet: for the second year in a row he’s bagged a spot in our best-dressed edit.

Karan Johar

Karan Johar in Tom Ford, Gatsy-Aliph, Dolce & Gabbana and SS HOMME at the NEXA IIFA Awards 2016

Karan Johar in Tom Ford, Gatsy-Aliph, Dolce & Gabbana and SS HOMME

Bless, he really, really made an effort! His suits are invariably two sizes too big for him but here, it fits him like a glove — I suppose that’s Tom Ford for you ;-) Lapel pins, nowadays, grate me, thanks to their ubiquity amongst the Bollywood menfolk. But on Karan Johar here, it’s looking rather cute. Now, just wish he left the last button of his waistcoat undone, this look would have gotten a perfect ten from me.

Zayed Khan

Zayed Khan at NEXA IIFA Awards 2016

Zayed Khan

I’m a sucker for desi menswear, so this look of Zayed Khan had to be here. Having said that, I’m in love with that kurta! The drape and the mint hue elevated the humble item from Indian’s men’s wardrobes to ethereal levels.

Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh in Tom Ford at NEXA IIFA Awards 2016

Ranveer Singh in Tom Ford S/S’16

O what a gorgeous dinner jacket that is on Ranveer Singh! Just wish his trousers were taken up slightly more and that he went for a substantial bow-tie or the air-tie route, then this would have been a look to celebrate, capture in song, tell long, wistful stories about around the campfire.

Ranveer Singh in Tom Ford at NEXA IIFA Awards 2016

Ranveer Singh

That pint-sized bow-tie is not bringing anything to the proceedings; rather, it’s distracting from that exquisite green refraction jacquard fabric of the cocktail jacket. Still, it’s an outfit that works fantastically, thanks to its boldness and simplicity — both things that are important to keep in mind when pulling a fancy sartorial move like this.

Anil Kapoor

THE picture of nocturnal elegance in that midnight blue Brooks Brothers dinner suit, Saint Laurent bow-tie, Satya Paul cummerbund, but we expect nothing less from an old hand in this red carpet game like Messr Anil Kapoor.

Fawad Khan

Fawad Khan in Republic by Omar Farooq at NEXA IIFA Awards 2016

Fawad Khan in Republic by Omar Farooq

For the third night in a row Fawad Khan wore Republic by Omar Farooq and this was easily the best of the lot. And his was my favourite look of the night: clean and simple on the surface but is packed with unusual details. How so? Have a look at the waistcoat — it’s no ordinary waistcoat but a double-breasted one. Then look closely at his shirt collar and you’d find a collar-pin in there. Now a collar-pin in the 21st century suggests you’re a man of particular fastidiousness, the kind of person who exercises taste, restraint and flair in everything he does. And yes, maybe also the kind who is grieving about Boardwalk Empire going off air.

I also love how he kept the proportions in mind and went with a thick tie to go with the wide lapels of the suit, stuck to monochrome so as not to distract from the unusual details, I can go on and on. Messr Khan, my hat is well and truly off — you really demonstrated your sartorial nous in the past few days.

Who was your favourite?

Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor‘s sneaker collection is a constant source of wonder for me. Name any designer sneaker — Givenchy Tyson, Rick Owens Geobasket, Giuseppe Zanotti London, Alexander McQueen Oversized, adidas x Rick Owens Tech Runner — and he seems to have it in his shoe closet. And for Udta Punjab promotion trail, he took out a good few of them for a spin. Wanna see?

My favourite was the Rick Owens low-top Baseball sneakers: seriously slick and yet street smart thanks to the shark-tooth sole.

While we are at it, I must say a word (or ten!) about Shahid’s get-up during Udta Punjab promotions. Styled by Vasundhara Sharma, all the looks combined effortless summer cool with a touch of put-together smartness. And the best thing about them is that it is accessible to one and all: grab a nice casual shirt/tee, slip into a pair of jogger chinos and get on a pair of minimalist sneakers and you’re good to go.

Sooraj Pancholi

Sooraj Pancholi turned up at the IIFA Rocks event in Madrid last Friday in a Giorgio Armani dinner suit, which was previously worn by Tiger Shroff at the IIFA Awards last year.

Sooraj dressed up with the peak lapel dinner jacket with a somewhat wide tie, while Tiger ditched neckwear altogether, pairing it with a black shirt.

So, my question to you is: whose take on this utterly classic dinner suit you liked better?

PS. Sooraj was styled by Abhilasha Devnani and Tiger by Vainglorious and Muskaan Goswami.

Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh

Now that the dust has settled on Filmfare editor Jitesh Pillai’s epic birthday party, shall we have a look at the noteworthy menswear looks from that night?

Ah, Karan Johar is turning out to be quite the fashinsto! From Givenchy graphic sweatshirts and skate shoes to Lanvin lapel pins, Valentino camo trench, to Chanel reflectors, he always seems to be sporting THE IT items of the seasons. And the latest such item he is brandishing is the silver edition of the Alexander McQueen ‘Oversized’ sneakers. While there’s a sober version of this sneaker, which Bollywood’s OG sneaker head, Shahid Kapoor, has, trust K.Jo to go for the glitziest one! Just wish he opted out of the lapel pin and the pocket squares and let the statement sneakers be the centrepiece of his outfit. Next time, I guess — you live, you learn :-)

Well, Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh weren’t just the life and soul of the party, they also were the best dressed of the night. But what got my attention were the sneakers these two were sporting. Ranbir was in the sold-out adidas Yeezy Boost 350 by Kanye West in pirate black and Ranveer in cult adidas Originals model München.

So, whose outfit do you liked better: Ranbir or Ranveer? I’ve to go with Ranbir — there was something about this understated get-up that got me googly-eyed.
